Skunk Smell in Silver Spring, Maryland

Something stinks in the town of Silver Spring, Maryland. It's skunk smell! Often people are surprised to discover how much wildlife lives right here in Silver Spring. You expect to see skunks, rabbits, or even bears on the Appalachian Trail, but in civilized Silver Spring? Not really. But, this is not correct.

There are many species of wildlife in this area and each brings special challenges when they come into contact with people and their dwellings. Skunk smell is certainly one of the most obvious, but attic fires from gnawing squirrels, damaged siding and vents from invading raccoons and stained brick from nesting swallows are also common.

Many people wonder why skunks make that terrific stink. I guess only the Creator knows for sure, but they use it as a defensive mechanism that allows them to go through life mostly unbothered by other animals. Even bears and other large predators will think twice before taking on a creature that fights back with skunk smell.

In early spring you may notice an unusually large concentration of skunk smell during their breeding season. Human females might use perfume to attract a male. Female skunks spritz males they don't like. Skunk smell even says "Go away" to another skunk!

During summer as the young are growing it is common for juveniles to let loose a little spray almost accidently. Just like other young, it takes a while for them to be "toilet trained" and a den may have a strong aroma of skunk smell while they are developing.

Year round, adults and juveniles will spray for defense. If they are startled, even by very loud noises, they will release a little or a lot of spray, depending on the need. If you encounter a skunk in the open, do not approach any closer. Do not scream and run. Be still and quiet and back away slowly. Any unnecessary alarm will leave you coated in hard-to-remove skunk smell.

You can avoid skunk smell and all other problems associated with these animals by making your property less attractive to wildlife guests. If you have an animal move in, skunk removal by a wildlife control operator will prevent further problems.

We solve many types of wildlife control conflicts in Silver Spring and surrounding areas. Give us a call if you need expert animal removal and/or live wildlife trapping. We can also perform an inspection of your property to evaluate the problem.

Many of the projects we solve involve raccoon families in attics and chimneys, mud swallow nests on stucco, woodpeckers drilling siding, voles and gophers destroying lawns, rats or squirrels thumping and bumping around inside walls and in attics, bat infestations, skunks stealing pet food and snakes living in crawlspaces and stone walls.

Along with physical damage and disease, wild animals also bring along disturbance and nuisance with all their noise and commotion and smell. Baby raccoons chirp and chitter like little birds; raccoons and rats will fight all night and keep people awake; skunk smell takes the cake, but have you ever smelled a dead animal in your ventilation system? We have seen much, much more than these problems, but that is a general idea of the kinds of problems that my professional wildlife removal operators and I are prepared to solve.

Not only do my technicians and I trap and remove problem wild animals, we do a lot of other dirty work, too. Don't hesitate to call us for dead animal removal, pigeon waste cleanup, bat guano removal, mouse droppings, decontamination, repairs, above ground and below ground rodent slick fencing, odor control for skunk spray, and the like. We are a full service pest control company with a wide range of animal control solutions.

I have been in the professional wildlife control business for many years. My favorite stories and experiences are removing bats from schools and churches.

For pigeon and bird control, bat removal, or relief from other pest animals, call our wildlife management experts. Many nuisance wildlife companies offer critter capture and control; our wildlife operators provide professional pest wild animal management. We remove the following AND MORE:

Raccoons on a Rampage Removed from Mobile Homes

SILVER SPRING CITY— Raccoons destroyed two homes in a mobile home park last week and the families are extremely upset.

"I heard some footsteps in the ceiling and I thought it was mice," said homeowner Sarah Jamison. "So I put some mouse poison up there, but a few nights ago my 5 year old son said he thought he'd seen a coon's feet and snout peering through a hole."

The Jamisons aren't the only ones with raccoon problems in the mobile home complex.

Kyle Anderson and his family said a raccoon's been living underneath their home for a few weeks now and somehow found its way up into the kitchen. It destroyed most of the family's food supply and the fabrics on the chairs and at the window.

Anderson said he lost his job two months ago and the food the raccoon destroyed was supposed to get them through until he received his next unemployment check.

"It's hard," he said. "I just don't know what we're going to do."

Incredibly, the owner of the mobile home park volunteered to help the Jamison and Anderson families hire a raccoon removal professional.

The professional came out and trapped each of the raccoons. He also removed several raccoon babies living in the ceiling of the Jamison home.

He also installed a long skirting underneath the Anderson home so future raccoons could not get back in.

The owner also took food from his own pantry and brought it over to the Andersons. The owner did not want to be named but said he was happy to help out some of his residents in these hard economic times.

"I am just doing what I would hope someone would do for me," he said.
